Photo every day of the year - Jan 25th - Boscombe Pier

Boscombe Pier © Mark Pelleymounter
A shot I have had in mind for some time.

This is the underside of Boscombe Pier taken at night on a 30 second exposure at iso 800 f4.

I had to push the exposure slightly in photoshop to bring back some details in the underside, but this was relatively easy as I had made sure to take the shot in RAW mode for later conversion.

Converted to Black and White in photoshop and then a slight dodge and burn after noise reduction using Neat Image plugin'

A little late taking an posting tonight.  My original idea did not work out so had to quickly come up with a substitute.

The bottle is lit over 4 seconds by a single flashlight at different directions.

Slight crop and some burning in photoshop.

Photo every day of the year - Jan 22nd - Black and White Refraction

Black and White Refraction © Mark Pelleymounter
Today is a busy day with an evening taken up with a party, so had to quickly come up with an idea today.

This is, I think, going to be a shot that I will revisit in the future as I believe it will benefit from a darker room so that there is less reflections showing in the glass.

Simply two pieces of card behind the glass.

Photo every day of the year - Jan 21st - Unysis Traffic

Tonight, I wanted to combine this great building with elements of movement, so went for four seperate exposure for the traffic light trails.

Combining two elements from recent photographs, I used the same glass globe and took a long exposure shot in a dark room and circled it with an LED torch to create light trails.

Today, I chose the same location as yesterday's "Toy Town" image, but this time in the evening to get some traffic trails.

Photo every day of the year - Jan 18th - Toy Town

Continuing with trying out new things and techniques, I have today taken a rather mundane shot of a round about with the thought to make into a fake "tilt/shift" lens image to make it all look like a toy model set.

This was done as follows:

Photo every day of the year - Jan 17th - Water Sparkles

Returning to a photo I first did several years ago, I thought I would re-try it today.

The photo is of water coming out of a tap at full flow and was taken with flash at 1/64th power and at 1/250th second.

Photo every day of the year - Jan 16th - Light Painting part 2

Light Rainbow © Mark Pelleymounter
Following on from yesterdays first efforts at light painting with a torch, today I decided on less geometric images with random movements of the torch.

Two images today, inspied by the amazing work of Michael Bosanko.

In these, I made the kitchen as dark as I possibly could, set the camera to 100 ISO, and manual 30 second exposure at f22.

I then used an led torch or a piece of string and set it swinging.

The top image is completely unprocessed.  The colours were from two grad filters (one nuetral and one tobacco that I placed in front of the lens.

The bottom image had three layers with colour balance adjustments made and masked in photoshop.

Hope you like.

Photo every day of the year - Jan 14th -Red Splash

Red Water Droplet Splash - © Mark Pelleymounter

With the weather still poor outside, I am being pretty much restriced to indoor photo work so far this year.  I cannot wait for the weather to warm up to get out and about and explore the world around us.

I also think I need to do a bit more than simply posting a photograph taken on teh day and perhaps give a little bit more insight into how it was taken.

Taken with flashgun set on manual power at 1/16th and bounced of the ceiling to give a low key effect.

Photo every day of the year - Jan 3rd

Today's image. Taken with flash and long exposure inside my car.

Need to look at re-working this as one of the tripod legs is in the frame.

Photo every day of the year - Jan 2nd

Both of these were taken with a single hotshoe flash with the camera and object in the bath!!

With the flash bounced off the sides of the bath it gives an even light and the bath surface allows reflections below the object. This gives an advert style appearance and mimikes a pro light box.

Photo a day for 2011

This year, I have decided to challenge myself to make at least one photo each and every day during 2011.

The reason for this is to push myself to try new ideas and different techniques throughout the year and share them with you.

Hopefully, during the course of the year I will have learnt a great deal and improved along the way.

Here is one from Jan 1st - well, to be honest, shortly after midnight with family members swirling sparklers.

This was taken with the camera on tripod and a shutter speed of 15 seconds. ISO 200 lens at 18mm and f3.5.
